In my previous post and video, I mentioned the trap that we fall into when we think about achieving annual goals.
Annualized thinking lacks a sense of urgency and that causes procrastination as you keep telling yourself there’s lots of time until the end of the year.
Now, picture how people inside organizations behave when the year is coming to an end, like in November and December.
Suddenly, salespeople have a heightened sense of urgency as they pull out all the stops to hit their annual sales targets.
Business owners, like coaches and freelancers, are in the same boat, as they rush to try and achieve the business goals they set at the start of the year.
What changed?
Nothing except that you’re now nearing an unnecessary deadline, which in most organizations is December 31st.
And you know, along with that heightened sense of urgency, there’s a palpable excitement in the air as a new year gets closer and closer.
The last 6 weeks or so of the year are the most exciting.
So, here’s a question for you: What if you could create that palpable excitement every week of the year, not just during the last 6 weeks or so?
What would that kind of excitement do for your focus, commitment, and energy levels, and results?
Now, how do you create that for yourself and your business?
Well, think: your thinking drives your actions, and your actions drive results.
We could legitimately say that the results you get are based on your thinking.
So, if you want better results, you must change your thinking.
And this is why you must ditch annualized thinking, and instead, you start thinking, planning, and acting in 12-week periods.
Why 12 weeks?
There are 3 key reasons.
12-week planning is more predictable.
12-week planning is long enough for you to achieve significant results.
12-week planning is short enough to create the sense of urgency you need to increase your excitement, focus, and commitment to achieve great goals in your business and your personal life.
A good 12-week plan is numbers and activities based.
And a good 12-week plan focuses on the top 1 to 3 things that will create the greatest impact on your business and you go after those few things with excitement, energy, commitment, and focus.
Now, please note, we’re not talking about quarterly planning here.
This is not that! Quarterly planning is part of your old way of thinking, and you’re not going to think that way anymore.
You want better results, so you need better thinking.
Hence, every 12 weeks stands completely on it own.
Think of 12 weeks as a year.
What do you want to commit to, focus on, and plan for the next 12 weeks?
Choose only 1 to 3 things, and focus on them.
Once your 12 weeks is completed, you’re going to take a break, celebrate, maybe go on a vacation, and then you’re going to start a brand-new 12 week period, which will be completely separate from the previous one.
Setting your goals, planning your actions, and creating the urgency and excitement you need to stay on top of your game is what this is all about, and thinking in terms of just 12 weeks at a time is how you’re going to achieve results as you’ve never believed possible before.
In fact, once you get rolling with this, you’ll achieve more in 12 weeks than most people achieve in 12 months.
This is powerful stuff.
That’s it for today’s post and video. In my next post and video, which will be out on Friday, you’re going to learn how to strategize, plan, and act to crush your next 12 weeks.
